Another Stakes Placing For Evergreen Runner Current

The gritty Hinkle Farms-bred Current (6yo out of Crosswinds) returned to the graded stakes level for the first time in nearly two years on Saturday in the G3 San Luis Rey Stakes, finishing third.

Coming into the race off a victory, Current happily tracked the leader in second a few lengths off that horse’s hip. Around the turn in the 1 ½ mile turf race, he made his move to close the distance but wasn’t able to get up in time and settled for third in the end.

A $725,000 purchase from the Hinkle consignment in 2017, Current won the G3 Bourbon Stakes in his third start before earning two stakes placings the following year and a Grade 2 placing early in his 4-year-old season. The Curlin son has earned nearly $500,000 in his career with four victories and eight other top three finishes in 30 starts over four seasons of racing.
