The second time was the charm for Hinkle Farms-bred Aug Lutes (3f o/o Not My Tap), who won the Glen Cove Stakes in her second stakes start at Belmont Park.
Racing on the grass for the first time, the seven-furlong race saw the filly race near last early on before entering the far turn four wide. By the time they exited the turn she was even wider on the track and making a big rally.
As they raced into the final furlong, Aug Lutes hit the lead and raced away from the field to win by 1 ¼ lengths with a three-way battle for second behind her.
“She had only run four times and the first two I’m not sure she had it all figured out,” Trombetta said. “This year, these races get so much tougher so much quicker. She exceeded everyone’s expectations. I think this was a pretty good race. There were some pretty nice horses in there.”
The first stakes winner for her dam, Aug Lutes is out of a half-sister to stakes winner and multiple graded stakes-placed Allied Air Raid from the family of Grade 1 winner Jack Milton. Aug Lutes was purchased for $47,000 at the Keeneland September Yearling Sale in 2019.
