It was a debut victory for Deterministic (2c out of Giulio’s Jewel) at Saratoga when the colt earned Thoroughbred Daily News ‘Rising Star’ status for the win.

Racing over six furlongs on the dirt, Deterministic was off to a slow start and had to settle near the back of the pack. Jockey Joel Rosario let the inexperienced runner get settled before asking him to move closer to the leaders.

Sent a five wide with just over a quarter mile left, he went even wider as they approached the stretch and bumped with another runner in upper stretch. Deterministic rolled up to the leaders in the final sixteenth to get up and win by half a length.

Trained by Christophe Clement for St. Elias Stable, Ken Langone, C. Steven Duncker, and Vicarage Stable, the colt was a $625,000 purchase at Keeneland September – the fifth highest priced yearling of the fourth session.

“He went down to Ocala and the reports from Monique Delk, who oversees racehorse development for St. Elias, were always very positive,” bloodstock agent Mick Wallace, who signed the ticket, told the Saratoga Special. “Did I think he’d necessarily be a Saratoga-type 2-year-old? Probably not, but that’s all credit to him and to the systems St. Elias has in place. It all happened very organically and it looks like they’ve got a nice horse.”

The colt is the third winner from three to race out of the Speightstown mare Giulio’s Jewel. That mare is a granddaughter of stakes winner Amelia, who produced five stakes winners and six stakes performers.

Giulio’s Jewel’s Frosted filly sells as Hip 2530 at the upcoming Keeneland September Yearling Sale.
