Deterministic (4c o/o Giulio’s Jewel) became the newest Grade 1 winner to hail from the Hinkle Farms breeding program on Sunday when he won the G1 Manhattan Stakes in his second Grade 1 start.
Coming into the race after a win in the G2 Fort Marcy Stakes last out, Deterministic was quick out of the gate in the 1 1/8-mile turf race. Jockey Kenderick Carmouche let him cruise on the front end as another horse kept him honest around Saratoga.
In the stretch, it looked like Deterministic may be in the clear as he opened up multiple lengths on the field – but he was quick to show that he wasn’t going to bow down easily when a pair of horses approached the colt in the final furlong. He dug deep to win by a head and give trainer Miguel Clement his first career Grade 1 victory as a trainer.
This was the sixth career win for Deterministic, who has graded stakes victories on the dirt and turf and was also third in last year’s G1 Saratoga Derby among his third graded stakes placings. Racing for St. Elias Stable, Ken Langone, C. Steven Duncker and Vicarage Stable, the colt was a $625,000 purchase by St. Elias from Hinkle.
Deterministic’s dam Giulio’s Jewel is a three-time winner herself. She went on to produce three winners from three to race with the group also including 10-time winner Frills. Giulio’s Jewel is a half-sister to Grade 2-placed Duff One and out of a daughter of the successful broodmare Amelia.
