It was a first Breeders’ Cup winner for Hinkle Farms as a breeder on Saturday when More Than Looks (4c out of Ladies’ Privilege) impressed in the G1 Breeders’ Cup Mile.
Coming to the race after two runner-up finishes in Grade 1 races, he looked primed for another Grade 1 effort by trainer Cherie DeVaux, who’d trained him to eight top three finishes in his 10 pre-Breeders’ Cup starts.
Breaking last out of the gate, the 4-year-old was happy to stay comfortable as the back marker early on. He raced near the rear of the field for much of the race until Jose Ortiz started hustling him with just over three furlongs left to run.
More Than Looks was eager to please and steadily worked his way closer to the leaders in the turn. Coming into the stretch five wide, More Than Looks loomed large behind the leaders when urged by Ortiz and got up in the final sixteenth.
Still full of run, he was able to pull away to win by three quarters of a length to take his earnings to $1,870,715 with five wins and four other top three finishes in 11 starts for Victory Racing Partners.
More Than Looks is the first foal out of the stakes winning Ladies’ Privilege. That mare is a half-sister to multiple graded stakes winner and Grade 1 placed Takeover Target and out of a half-sister to multiple Grade 1 winning Critical Eye.
Ladies’ Privilege’s 2-year-old American Pharoah filly was a $525,000 yearling and is already placed on the track. Her Gun Runner colt sold for $700,000 at Keeneland September this year and she had an Upstart filly in 2024. She was bred to Flightline in 2024.
