Grade 1 placed last year, Westwood (4g o/o Indian Bay) became the newest Hinkle Farms-bred stakes winner on Saturday with a win in the G2 San Pasqual S. at Santa Anita.

Making his first start of the year for owner C R K Stable, the John Shirreffs trainee kicked off 2026 racing 1 1/8 miles on the dirt after a steady workout pattern that saw him register a bullet three breezes ago. Westwood wasn’t the first horse out of the gate but quickly took control of the race after crossing to the rail from the outside post position.

Pressured throughout the early running by Bartholdy in the tightly packed field, Westwood had to face a duel with Getaway Car around the far turn before he could truly take command. Putting that rival way coming into the stretch, Westwood was able to build his lead in the closing stages.

By the time he hit the line, he was 2 ¾ lengths in front of Getaway Car with the third placed runner over 10 lengths behind him.

This is the second win and eighth top three finish in 10 starts for Westwood, who has earned $313,900 and placed in all three of his graded stakes attempts.

Mayberry Farm was the purchaser of the $700,000 Keeneland September offering from Hinkle.

Westwood is the latest stakes winner out of Hinkle’s very successful broodmare Indian Bay. The Indian Charlie mare’s five winners from six to race include Grade 3 winner and Grade 1-placed Shivaji and stakes winner and multiple Grade 1-placed Tarabi.

Indian Bay is a second-generation Hinkle-bred as a daughter of Grade 2 winner Buy The Barrel. That mare’s four winners include multiple Group 3 placed Mise En Rose and the stakes paced Stave. Buy The Barrel is one of five stakes performers and four stakes winners out of the stakes winning Affordable Price.

Westwood has a 2-year-old Life Is Good colt named Shower Beer who Hinkle sold to Flying Dutchmen for $1.25 million in September and foaled a full sister to Shivaji and Tarabi in 2025. She was bred to Twirling Candy last year.
