Deterministic (3c out of Giulio’s Jewel) became a dual surface grade stakes winner on Saturday when the Hinkle Farms-bred won the G3 Virginia Derby.
The winner of the G3 Gotham Stakes in March, Deterministic had proven to be a good turf horse since that victory. Before heading to the Virginia Derby, he placed in the G1 Saratoga Derby Invitational and G3 Manila Stakes in his two previous turf starts – both coming in New York.
Shipping to Colonial Downs for this start going 1 1/8 miles, he settled in midpack after dealing with early traffic. It wasn’t until they raced toward the final quarter mile that Deterministic was encouraged forward. The 3-year-old had his work cut out for him in the stretch, but he proved to be up to the challenge as he won by a neck at the line.
It was the third win in seven starts for the colt trained by Christophe Clement for St Elias Stable, Ken Langone, Steven Duncker, and Vicarage Stable. In all, Deterministic has five top three finishes overall.
Deterministic’s dam Giulio’s Jewel is the dam of three winners from three to race with daughter Frills the winner of 10 races in her own career. Deterministic’s youngest sibling is a 2-year-old Frosted filly named Morana.
